What does skinny fat mean?
Short answer
Skinny fat is an informal term for having a normal body weight or BMI while carrying a relatively high body fat percentage and relatively little muscle. The closest research term is normal weight obesity: normal BMI with high body fat.

Why the scale and BMI miss it
BMI is weight divided by height squared. It has no idea what the weight is made of. Two people at the same height and weight can carry very different amounts of muscle and fat, so someone with little muscle and a fair amount of fat can sit comfortably in the “normal” BMI range.
Researchers call a normal BMI with high body fat normal weight obesity. A 2014 review in Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases linked it with more metabolic dysregulation, higher risk of metabolic syndrome and higher mortality than normal weight with normal body fat. The review argued for defining obesity by adiposity rather than body weight.
How to measure it instead
- Body fat estimate. Any consistent method works: the body fat calculator (tape or skinfolds), a smart scale used the same way each time, or a photo-based estimate.
- Waist circumference. An international consensus statement recommends measuring waist alongside BMI, because it adds risk information BMI can’t capture.
- Lean mass for your height. FFMI shows whether low muscle is part of the picture.
How people usually change it
“Skinny fat” is usually less a fat problem than a muscle problem. The approach most commonly recommended is body recomposition: progressive resistance training with adequate protein, at roughly maintenance calories or a small deficit. Research reviews show fat loss and muscle gain happening in the same period.
Because weight may barely move, track composition, waist and comparable progress photos rather than the scale alone.

Common questions
How do I know if I'm skinny fat?
A normal BMI isn't enough to tell. The signal is a normal weight combined with a higher-than-expected body fat estimate, a relatively large waist for your frame, and little visible muscle. A body-fat estimate and a waist measurement tell you more than the scale.
Should a skinny fat person cut or bulk?
Many people in this situation do best focusing on resistance training and adequate protein at roughly maintenance calories, which can allow fat loss and muscle gain at the same time (body recomposition), rather than a hard cut or a fast bulk.
Is skinny fat a health concern?
Research on normal weight obesity links high body fat at a normal BMI with more metabolic dysregulation and higher cardiometabolic risk. If health — not just appearance — is the concern, that's a conversation for a doctor, who can assess it properly.
